I believe what we have here is a Whitley’s Boxfish. It was taken in Kealakekua Bay near the Captain Cook Monument in Kona on the Big Island.

Here’s a funky little creature. It could be a slate pencil urchin although identifying species isn’t one of Hawaii Photo Blogs specialties. Taken near the Captain Cook Monument in Kona on the Big Island.
